About the US-Israel Biotech Council
![]() |
The worldwide biotechnology industry, facing decreasing capital resources and increasing R&D expenditures, is turning to strategic alliances, i.e., joint R&D, technology patent licenses and mergers, as its principal vehicle for growth.
The US- Israel Biotech Council (USIBC) is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to promoting strategic alliances between growing North
American and Israeli Life Sciences industries, through
networking, information exchange, and public policy initiatives.
Networking
Networking between North American and Israeli industry leaders,
investors, and researchers is a key priority of the Council.
The Council participates in major industry trade shows throughout
North America, representing Israeli companies, and promoting binational
biotech start-up ventures. In addition the Council cultivates
relationships with other biotech associations such as: the Bio
Industry Organization, the Maryland Bioscience Alliance and the
New York Biotech Association.
Information Exchange
Another priority of the Council is to facilitate binational information exchange, in written or computer readable form, on licensing, joint ventures and investment opportunities.
Using Internet technology, the Council's Web Site serves as an
electronic forum and bulletin board for specific topics, updates
and recently issued patents, and technology licensing opportunities.
Public Policy/ Government Affairs
The Council's third priority is to advocate and support binational
governmental initiatives. These initiatives include the facilitation
of funding and support for commercial biotechnology ventures,
initiation of trade missions and the establishment of relationships
with Chambers of Commerce and nonprofit organizations.
Council Biopartnering Activities:
ALLIANCE: a forum where biotech industry professionals
from Israel and North America meet to explore business partnering
and technology licensing opportunities.
ALLIANCE '96 ( at BIO '96): Over 170 participants
attended a two-day biopartnering program at the annual meeting
of the Bio Industry Organization (BIO '96), Philadelphia. The
highlight of the ALLIANCE '96 was the "Matchmaking Program"
comprised of one-on-one meetings. More then 164 separate meetings
were prearranged for 32 licensing directors of North American
companies and 24 Israeli representatives. US participants included
companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Smith Kline Beecham,
Bristol Myers, Bayer, Glaxo-Wellcome and Zeneca.
The 20 ongoing collaboration and interaction of the partners that
met at matchmaking program and the excellent feedback of both
Israeli and the North American participants encouraged us to
continue and plan future biopartnering programs.
In addition to the North American partners, a delegation of 15
Egyptian Biotech companies participated in the program and in
the Israel-Egypt Partnering Luncheon sponsored by the USIBC
and the NIH- Fogarty Center and hosted by the Philadelphia-Israel
Chamber of Commerce.
ALLIANCE '95 (at BioEast 95): Over 130 biotech industry
professionals, including representatives from 24 leading Israeli
biotech companies and university technology transfer groups participated
in the one-day program. ALLIANCE '95
was the first major partnership meeting held
as part of BioEast '95 conference in Washington, DC The successful
outcome of Three major joint ventures that were established as
a result of this conference, prove the need to continue these
activities as annual partnering meetings.
World Wide Web/Internet:
To enhance communication among its members and to promote the
Council's activities, the USIBC has established a World Wide Web
home page ( http:// www.usibc.org). This site includes a directory
of Israeli technology available for licensing, a list of Council
members, and a schedule of upcoming events. Upon appropriate
funding, the Council will explore the possibility of developing
an on-line matchmaking program on the Internet, which will assist
our members in their partnering efforts.
